FUVAHMULAH
The Deep‑South Gem of the Maldives
Fuvahmulah is one of the most unique island in the Maldives: it is a single‑island atoll, isolated in the deep south of the archipelago, just below the equator. The island stretches about 4.5 km in length and around 1.2 km in width at its widest. Fuvahmulah is home to a vibrant local community, with a population of approximately 13,000 residents. Despite its remoteness, life here is connected: fishing, farming, traditional crafts, and local culture are central to daily life.
Why It’s Unique
-
Only island in the Maldives with two freshwater lakes: Dhadimagi Kilhi and Bandaara Kilhi.
-
Rich wetlands, mangroves, and marshes make up its interior—lush vegetation rarely seen on many other Maldivian islands.
-
Marine biodiversity is exceptional: many pelagic (open ocean) species, year‑round encounters with tiger sharks, and a variety of sharks, mantas, and large fish.
